No Hiding Place For Human Traffickers In Edo – Obaseki

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has vowed that his administration, in collaboration with stakeholders in the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration, will ensure the ugly trend is reduced to the barest minimum, declaring that there is no hiding place for traffickers in the state.
Obaseki made the vow at a conference organised by the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking, to examine and proffer solutions to the root causes of human trafficking in the state.
According to him, the major reasons people take to irregular migration are economic pressure, family pressure and unemployment, and assured that his administration is working tirelessly to create jobs for Edo citizens.
“As governor, I have vowed to reduce irregular migration in the state to the barest minimum before the end of my tenure with your help.
“My administration has put in place measures which include resettling victims of human trafficking after they are rescued. We provide medical assistance to the returnees as well as training to assist them to acquire skills,” he said.
The governor restated that his administration is committed to taking governance directly to the people to provide them with opportunities, which was one of the reasons people embarked on illegal migration.
He listed Uhunmwode and Orhionmwon as the local government areas with the highest numbers of persons engaged in irregular migration, and assured that measures have been put in place to boost economic activities in the areas.
The governor commended the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, for his support in the fight against the menace and stressed that the Royal Majesty’s intervention has in no small way, discouraged many Edo people from embarking on the risky journeys.
Social justice activist, Dr. Ayode Alakija, in her keynote address, said that a total of 1,037 people travel from Kano State to Tripoli, Libya, daily.
She urged governments at all levels to show commitment in solving the humanitarian crisis in areas that have high numbers of persons who embark on irregular migration.
The Deputy Head of European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mr. Richard Young, assured that the EU would continue to support Nigeria in tackling irregular migration and human trafficking.
Young commended Governor Obaseki’s efforts at leading from the front, in the fight against human trafficking and illegal immigration in the state.


Edo, NYSC Strengthen Ties On Education, Health Care Delivery In Rural Areas

BENIN CITY – The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said the state government would strengthen existing partnership with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the state to drive his administration’s reforms in education and health sectors to benefit people living in rural areas of the state.
Obaseki disclosed this when he received the new state Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mr. Adebayo Ojo, at the Government House, in Benin City, on Monday.
He said the state government will work together with the NYSC as partners to deliver more value in terms of education and healthcare to people residing in the rural areas.
He noted, “My administration is committed to supporting you. We will include you in our plans to ensure that our people feel your impact. We understand you have some challenges, and we have you in mind.
“I want to assure you that officials posted to the state are not strangers in our land; We will treat you as one of us as we see you as part of us. The services of corps members who serve as teachers and doctors posted to rural areas will greatly help our people,” he said.
Obaseki explained that his administration intends to make unemployment history in the state, noting that the state government would need the support of the NYSC for the government to achieve her plans.
Earlier, Mr. Ojo said that a total of 6,653 corps members are currently serving in the state, including 3,144 males and 3,509 females. He added that 55 of the corps members are medical doctors, 33 of them are pharmacists and 81, lawyers.
Ojo noted that in support of governor Obaseki’s policy on revamping the education sector, about 90 percent of the corps members in the state are posted to secondary schools across the state as their Places of Primary Assignment (PPA).

Man kills lover after he found condoms in her bag

BENIN CITY-A thirty-eight-year-old mother of three has been killed by her lover after he allegedly found male condoms inside her hand bag in Benin City.
It was learnt that the victim identified as Gladys Okoh who had parted ways with husband, was stabbed with a kitchen knife thrice in her stomach inside her aged mother’s room by her lover, one Osaremwinda Omobude Idumwonyi, 46.
It was also gathered that the alleged discovery fuelled her killer’s suspicion that she was embroiled in sizzling romantic relationships with other men.
The dastardly act occurred at 13, Ehiyoboy Street, Off Aifuwa Street, Off Upper Sokponba road, Benin City, few hours after she left her lover’s residence where she passed the night.
Our reporter’s visit to the area revealed that the scene of the attack and the suspect’s residence are nearby buildings.
It was also gathered that her aged-mother who is a tenant in the building had been relocated following the unfortunate incident.

The suspect, now cooling off inside the maximum cell, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Benin City was said to have left his residence to commit the act.
He was further alleged to have walked passed her aged mother who was sitting by the door to launch the attack as her efforts to rescue her daughter who screamed in pains during the violence failed.
The suspect building which he inherited recently from his late father was under lock and key when our reporter visited last weekend.
It could not be ascertained whether the said condoms were found inside Gladys bag while she was with him in his room the previous night or during the day when he entered her aged-mother’s rented apartment.
Inside source at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Benin disclosed that the suspected killer Osaremwinda Omobude Idumwonyi told the police that the deceased picked a kitchen knife to stab him when an argument ensued as he overpowered her.
However, the said knife was recovered from the suspect’s kitchen by police investigators when he was arrested and a taken home for a search.
Confirming the gruesome murder, the Public Relations Officer for Edo State Police Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said “Mike, we are investigating”.
