Community Mourns Bizzare Killing Of Indigenes By Suspected Herdsmen

EKPOMA ( EDO ): Eguare -Ekpoma is in mourning mood following the bizzare killings of two youths from the community in far away Rivers and Enugu states .
Christopher Osemuahu is the latest indigene of Ekpoma that is reported to have been murdered outside his native home by killer herdsmen. According to a report, Christopher Osemuahu was killed in Port- Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on December 15, 2017 by unknown gunmen. It was also reported that one Oscar Jedewe, another indigene of Eguare-Ekpoma was brutally murdered in Enugu, in the Eastern part of Nigeria sometime in November, 2017.
Community Elders say both youths were part of the mass protest that was spear- headed by one Benedict Agbator Iribhogbe, a native of Ekpoma and member of the Esan Youth Movement after an attack on the community on January 6, 2017 which saw three people dead and several others injured. They believed strongly that the killing of the duo was carried out by Fulani herdsmen.
Many youths from Eguare-Ekpoma were reported to have gone into hiding following the death of their resident natives in bizarre circumstances.

On June 21, 2017, a woman identified as Mrs. Magaret Udiamehi was allegedly shot dead in her farm by Fulani herdsmen and her dismembered body was found in different locations of the farm by the police.

The women of Ekpoma community stormed the street and equally stormed the Palace of the Onojie, His Royal Highness Anthony Ehizojie Abumere II; expressing their displeasure over the murder of their colleague, adding that they were now afraid to go to their farms for fear of being raped or killed.

In a debate the same day by members of the State House of Assembly, A Bill sponsored by the lawmaker representing Ovia North East Constituency, Mr Bright Osayande, elicited unanimous condemnation of the activities of herdsmen in Edo State by lawmakers, who lamented low food production across the state due to the activities of herdsmen.

Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, appealed to the protesting women and youths to be calm. He recalled that similar incident occurred at Aviele in Etsako West Local Government, and Ewu in Esan Central Local Government Areas of the State.

Killings linked to herdsmen have become worrisome in Edo State as none of the suspects has been arrested by the police.
While the State House of Assembly had debated on a speedy passage of the bill for a law establishing Grazing Control Agency to check the activities of herdsmen in the state, the Federal Government has remain silent on the matter.
